August 2026: +€3,190 — and Gold Saved the Month
August closed at +€3,190. Gold had its best month ever, USDJPY climbed back to break-even after its record drawdown — while EURJPY and GBPUSD hurt. The verified breakdown.
By René Balke
August closed at +€3,190 — a solid month for a portfolio that did all of it by itself while I did nothing.
But the interesting part isn’t the total. It’s which strategies produced it. The Range Breakout EA — normally the workhorse — was negative on four of its six markets. What rescued the month was gold having the best month it has ever had, plus USDJPY finally clawing its way back from the deepest drawdown this account has ever seen.

August 2026 — by market and strategy
| Market | Strategy | August 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| XAUUSD (Gold) | Range Breakout EA | +€5,157.94 |
| XAUUSD (Gold) | ATR Candle Breakout | +€1,122.21 |
| USDJPY | Range Breakout EA | +€3,552.26 |
| USTEC | Go Long EA | +€1,043.95 |
| USTEC | Turnaround Tuesday | −€42.14 |
| US30 | Go Long EA | +€506.21 |
| US30 | Turnaround Tuesday | ±€0 (no trades) |
| US30 | Range Breakout EA | −€180.79 |
| DE40 | Go Long EA | −€45.49 |
| DE40 | Turnaround Tuesday | ±€0 (no trades) |
| DE40 | Range Breakout EA | −€694.17 |
| GBPUSD | Range Breakout EA | −€2,497.05 |
| EURJPY | Range Breakout EA | −€4,732.46 |
| Total | +€3,190.47 |
Under the hood: 171 trades, a 46.8% win rate, profit factor 1.13, and an intra-month drawdown of €3,479 — larger than the month’s final profit. A below-50% win rate is completely normal here, because most of these strategies aim for a reward well above their risk.
Gold — the golden boy
Gold is the reason August was green. +€5,158 from Range Breakout and +€1,122 from ATR Candle Breakout — €6,280 combined, its best month ever.
Zoom out and it isn’t close: across both strategies gold now stands at +€31,626 all-time, at a profit factor of 1.40, a win rate above 51%, and a maximum drawdown of only €5,930. Nothing else in this portfolio comes close to that stability.

The ATR Candle Breakout deserves a mention of its own. It took eight trades, half of them winners — with an average win of about €370 against an average loss of about €90. That’s the whole design showing up in one month: a take-profit roughly three times the stop, so a 50% hit rate produces a very good result.
USDJPY — back from the dead
+€3,552 in August, and it means more than the number suggests. USDJPY produced the worst drawdown this account has ever had: €23,373 from its peak. After August, it has recovered close to half of that, and the strategy’s all-time result is back to roughly break-even (−€256, profit factor 1.00) across 468 trades.

I’m not declaring victory. But a strategy that was deeply underwater for most of a year clawing its way back to flat is exactly the pattern I keep pointing at when people ask whether a bad stretch means something is broken. Usually it doesn’t.
The honest part — EURJPY and GBPUSD
EURJPY lost −€4,732 and GBPUSD −€2,497 — together −€7,230, and both genuinely hurt.
GBPUSD is the more frustrating one: I wrote in July that four green months had recovered about half of its long drawdown. August gave a good chunk of that back. EURJPY, meanwhile, has slid from a strong position earlier in the year to clearly negative all-time.
So the honest summary of the Range Breakout EA in August: negative on DE40, US30, GBPUSD and EURJPY, and profitable only on gold and USDJPY. That it still finished the month slightly positive overall (+€606) is entirely down to how big those two winners were.
The indices — small, and late-month give-back
The index strategies netted about +€588: USTEC +€1,002, US30 +€325, DE40 −€740.
Most of that was earned earlier in the month and handed back near the end, as every major index pulled back roughly 2–5% from its all-time high. Since Go Long and Turnaround Tuesday are long-only, they follow the index down — that’s not a fault to fix, it’s the deal. And “2–5% off the highs” is complaining at a very high level; the indices remain remarkably strong.
The big picture
Through the end of August the account stands at +€95,712 net across 4,310 trades, at a profit factor of 1.16 and a 52% win rate. 2026 is up roughly €35,000 — my best year so far.

Which left me €4,300 short of a number I’d been openly hoping for all month: €100,000 in total profit. I said in the video that I couldn’t influence it and would just have to wait.
I didn’t have to wait long. Three days into September, the account crossed it — the full story is here.

Next update
The September recap comes at the start of October. Until then: good trading — and remember that a month like this one, where four of six markets lost money and the total was still green, is exactly why I run a spread of strategies instead of just the one that worked last year.
